Pericope:  This is the immediate context of a particular verse in scripture.  It begins where a particular topic or story is introduced and continues until the writer shifts to a new topic.  It is a piece of a story that can stand on its own.  An example of a pericope within the book of Genesis would be the story of Cain.  It includes the attempt by Cain and his brother to make sacrifice, God's rejection of that sacrifice, Cain's murder of his brother, God cursing Cain with being a wanderer, and Cain going forth from his family and founding a city.  The story is introduced, told, and then concluded.  Once it is concluded another story begins or a greater story is continued.
